Why I’m having a not-quite-break from Blogging

So I was scrolling through my blog’s WordPress dashboard earlier, neatening some things up and having a bit of a brainstorm (more on that later) when I realised that we’re 12 days into August and I haven’t yet posted my Update/Summary for last month.

Now, I’m not beating myself up over this. I have a full-time job, lots of life admin and a whole load of travel planning to contend with, which (in case you were wondering), is why FlexFit has been a little bit quiet lately.

I used to put a lot of pressure on myself to churn out post upon post upon post. Twice a week minimum. With consistency. Go onto any blogging advice page and you’ll find that C word. Consistency is key. Choose how many posts per week, choose the days and the times you want to publish them and stick rigidly to that schedule. Readers LOVE consistency. Apparently.

Then I suddenly had this epiphany where I realised that I was getting unnecessarily stressed about my blog. It wasn’t enjoyable any more. I was considering stopping altogether because I couldn’t keep up with my two-posts-a-week schedule. Considering I’m both a newbie AND a part-time blogger the stress I was placing upon myself seemed incredibly disproportionate to the matter in hand.

I first started my blog because I like to write. It’s a way for me to be creative without actually being very good at artistic/creative things. It was a great way to establish my new career in the fitness industry, plus feedback from family and friends reassured me that it’s a useful way for people to ‘keep in touch’ even though they might live far away.

The fact that I was regularly freaking out about traffic, and SEO and endless social media promotions suddenly seemed a little bit…well, stupid.

I’m currently planning one of the most exciting ventures of my life. In September, myself and Tom will be jetting off to Dubai, South-East Asia and Australasia to travel, work, live and have adventures. We have no idea how long for. It’s a one-way ticket. Return date TBC. If I can’t keep up with my own blogging schedule in London, where I have a regular routine (that mostly consists of home-work-gym-sleep) there’s no way it’s gonna happen when I’m travelling.

Sure, there are going to be big chunks of time where I don’t have a job and I can relax on beaches and draft new posts to my heart’s content. But there will also be times that we’re trekking through the jungle, volunteering at an elephant sanctuary or even just training clients on the beach. And the last thing I’m going to be worrying about whilst we attempt to navigate through some tea-plantation somewhere is not having wifi to publish and promote my latest post on Instagram. No way.

So I’ve decided that erratic spontaneity is the new consistency. For me at least. No more rigourous schedules and post planning perfection. Just posts that I want to write, as and when I want to write them. Still (mostly) health and fitness related, but from September onwards there will be lots more sunshine, plenty of animals and a good helping of adventure.

    I absolutely understand where you are coming from regarding blog consistency. My time has been taken up with creating my website for my new business. I was open and honest from the start that I am only posting fortnightly to my blog as I simply can’t keep up, but am spending time engaging on social media answering questions and being involved in discussions.

    Enjoy your trip of a lifetime and if you do find the time you could create some epic posts.

    Enjoy your adventure!
    I went through something similar with writing on the blog. I committed to writing 2 times a week and posting once per day on instagram and made a very work-like schedule. It made it stressful! So now I’m writing when I have time and ideas. And that’s it 🙂
